Multi-carrier Signal Transmission through HVAC Ducts: Experimental Results for Channel Capacity

چکیده
In this paper, we report, for the first time, experimental results on channel capacity of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) ducts based on multi-carrier transmission technique and measured channel frequency responses in the 2.4 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. Experiments using actual synthesized signals through a building HVAC duct system demonstrate the ability to transmit with a spectral efficiency of 3.74 bps/Hz, corresponding to over 300 Mbps transmission rate within 2.4 GHz ISM band. The experimental results are within 80% of theoretical maximums reported in [1]. For the transmission schemes employed, these results confirm the potential of using the HVAC duct channel for indoor wireless networks.

Abstract— In this paper, we report theoretical channel capacity estimates of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) ducts based on multi-carrier transmission that uses M-QAM modulation and measured channel responses at 2.4 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. It is shown that, data rates in excess of 1 Gbps are possible over distances up to 500 m in “matched” ducts (on...

In this paper, we present an innovative solution to the handover problem in multi-story buildings using HVAC ducts for wireless communications. The proposed solution is based on a new system architecture design of the indoor wireless networks that use the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) ducts as a communication channel. Exploiting the system architecture design and the time di...
متن کاملPropagation Model for the HVAC Duct as a Communication Channel
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) ducts in buildings are typically hollow metal pipes which can be used as waveguides to carry signals and provide the network access to offices. Knowledge of channel properties is crucial to designing such a communication system. This paper presents a propagation model for a straight HVAC duct terminated at both ends. At high frequencies this duc...

In this paper, single-carrier frequency domain adaptive antenna array (SC-FDAAA) for the uplink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission in a cellular system is studied. By employing AAAweight control in frequency domain, the base station (BS) can suppress the multi-user interference (MUI) and therefore realize multi-user SC transmission. In addition, channel frequency sele...
متن کاملImpulse response of the HVAC duct as a communication channel
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) ducts in buildings behave as multimode waveguides when excited at radio frequencies and thus, can be used to distribute radio signals. The channel properties of the ducts are different from the properties of a usual indoor propagation channel. In this paper, we describe physical mechanisms which affect the HVAC channel impulse response and analy...
